West Seattle Blog… | Social Skills Summer Camp with Madyline Ekins of Branching Out ABA: New WSB Sponsor

Today we welcome a new WSB sponsor, behavioral analyst Madyline Ekins of ABA Diversification, which offers a week-long summer camp to help young children develop their social skills. Here’s what she wants you to know:

I am a behavior analyst and local parent from West Seattle. I have worked in the behavioral field for over ten years in schools, centers and homes across the United States. While in graduate school, I completed my thesis and research on using video models combined with play to teach social skills to children, and was amazed at how effective they were in introducing skills complex for young learners.

For the past two years, I have supported students with behavioral needs in local school districts. This summer, I want to provide additional support to families to build their social and emotional skills after two years of near social isolation. I will be running a morning camp for a week in August that focuses on using video models and lots of games to help teach young children to feel good in social situations. Some of the skills I hope to focus on this year include learning to play, sharing toys, taking turns, respecting personal space, accepting no from peers and siblings, and how to recognize and regulate major emotions.

One thing that makes my practice unique is that I don’t try to impose normative behavior on children. Instead, I gather information about areas where THEY feel they have social difficulties and provide them with tools to succeed in parks, games and school.

My camp is open to all children including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorders or those who may not have had many opportunities social over the past two years.

Our schedule will include circle times, snacks and daily activities based on learner and parent preferences. For an application and/or more information, send an e-mail [email protected].

We thank Madyline Ekins of ABA Diversification for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news through WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory form here, and find information on how to join the team by going here.
