SiFive’s HiFive Unmatched is the best RISC-V development board available today with enough horsepower for modest development/porting work and continues to see improvements with the mainstream Linux kernel. But availability on HiFive Unmatched is starting to dry up and SiFive doesn’t anticipate any further production runs as it begins to focus on the card’s successor.
The HiFive Unmatched was a nice RISC-V development board with SiFive’s Freedom U740 SoC, 16GB of DDR4 memory, support for microSD and M.2 NVMe SSD storage, a PCIe x16 slot, and Gigabit Ethernet. But that’s getting harder to find with today’s supply chain issues and now SiFive is instead focusing on its to-be-announced 2022 development platform.
SiFive’s Phil Dworsky wrote an update this week noting: “With such adoption of the ecosystem, demand has exceeded our already high expectations and we are on the verge of exhausting our production inventory. Given the challenge of supply chain issues that we overcame for the first run of these boards (issues that we continue to face), we have decided to focus on next generation SiFive HiFive development systems rather than to try to create another version of the unparalleled HiFive platform in 2022.”
Dworsky ended with “Our sincere apologies to anyone who wants a SiFive HiFive Unmatched board and couldn’t get one – stay tuned for news on next-gen HiFive development systems soon.“
It will definitely be interesting to see what SiFive can offer in 2022 for new development boards… A faster SoC would definitely be nice. Some are also interested in socket RAM support. Meanwhile, there’s growing interest and solutions around lower-cost development boards, so we’ll see if SiFive looks for new entrants there. Either way, stay tuned to Phoronix for more information and further testing of the new SiFive development boards.
