Lucy Movie Spinoff Show with Morgan Freeman in Development

Morgan Freeman is in advanced talks to star in a Lucy derivative series. Directed by the famous filmmaker Luc Besson, Lucy premiered in 2014. The sci-fi action film stars Scarlett Johansson as the titular character who gains extraordinary abilities when a drug is absorbed into her bloodstream. The film was a major box office success, grossing more than eleven times its $39 million budget with a total that topped $463 million. From audiences and critics however, the response has been more mixed. Although the film’s unique visuals received praise, in addition to Johansson’s performance, the plot of Lucy was derided as absurd and proved to be polarizing.

Yet, given its financial success, there have been constant discussions about the future of Lucy and a potential sequel. Besson has expressed different feelings about a second installment over the years, but has largely maintained a lack of interest in the project. At one point, he noted that the story wasn’t built for a follow-up. And even though it was rumored that the director was working on a screenplay for Lucia 2, Besson clarified that these rumors were false. Now, nearly a decade after the film’s debut, the story continues.

According VarietyMorgan Freeman is in advanced negotiations to star in a Lucy derivative series. If it moves forward, the actor would reprise his film role as Professor Samuel Norman. EuropaCorp and Village Roadshow are teaming up to produce the spin-off, which is currently keeping plot details under wraps.

Can Scarlett Johansson return to the Lucy Spinoff Show?

At this point, it’s unclear if Johansson will reprise her role as Lucy Miller for the spinoff. In the film’s wild ending, Johansson’s character somehow survives – but she becomes part of everything around her, part of the technology as well because she can use all of her brain power. Johansson’s involvement could also depend on whether the spin-off is a sequel, a prequel, or a story with a different actor portraying the character. It wouldn’t be the first time in recent memory that a complex sci-fi premise has been distilled for a TV show.

Unlimited, a film somewhat similar to the surface about brain power and mind-altering drugs, was made into a CBS series. Bradley Cooper reprized his role from the film, appearing in a recurring capacity, but the show was canceled after just one season. It remains to be seen if the Lucy the spinoffs will fare better and in which narrative direction they go. As of now, it looks like the project is still in a relatively early stage of development.
